Easy 5 Ingredient Guacamole Recipe

Today, just in time for Cinco de Mayo, I’m sharing my easy 5 ingredient recipe for guacamole. In addition to being tasty, it only takes about 5 minutes to put together before you can dip in and enjoy!

To be honest, I’ve simplified this recipe over the years by paring down the number of ingredients needed. However, if you desire more ingredients, feel free to add them! I just like the simplicity and quickness of these 5 flavors mixed together, and I almost always have them on hand when the mood for guac strikes!

First, start with a ripe avocado. I typically buy avocados that are on the harder side, and then let them sit for a few days to ripen. I like when they are not obviously soft to the touch, but if you press a finger to it there is a little give in the flesh. Peel the avocado (I slice mine down the middle of the long end) and remove the pit. I used to think that placing the pit in the finished guacamole would keep it from turning brown, has anyone else heard of that?

I typically mash my avocados with a fork, but if you like your guacamole chunky, dicing and then lightly smashing with a fork works best. From there, squeeze a quarter of a lemon over the avo - this is actually the ingredient that keeps it from turning brown, and also adds a nice hint of citrus. You can also use lime, or both lemon and lime. There are no hard and fast rules to great guac!

The next two ingredients are what pack this simple guac with so much flavor: sour cream and garlic salt. Before I tried this recipe, I liked neither avocados or sour cream - can you imagine? But, the blend of the two together along with copious amounts of garlic salt make for a dreamy, creamy guacamole that you won’t soon forget.

Next comes the hot stuff. I like fresh jalapeno rather than pickled, but you do you and use whatever kind of pepper you like. I typically dice my fresh jalapeno really small, and include a small about of the seeds, which is where the heat of the pepper comes from. Then, because I add ground black pepper to just about everything, I add a few twists of the grinder and mix it all together. Note, black pepper is optional and also adds a 6th ingredient to the mix - oops.

Now, the next step is optional, and if you NEED to eat the guac right away, you can skip this, but I really like the way the guacamole tastes after the mixture has had 15-20 minutes (or more) to rest together in the fridge. The flavors meld and it gets slightly chilled and it just enhances what I humbly think is already a great tasting guac. Skip it if you must, but if you have time, cover the dish and refrigerate for a bit - I promise you won’t regret this step!

Ok, now ya’ll know I’m not a food blogger (nor am I a food photographer, hence the just OK photos with this post), and while I know the ingredients I use for this recipe, I don’t know quantities because I make this to taste. But, I did want to include an ingredient list for you:

IMG_3276.jpg
  • Ripe Avocado

  • Lemon (fresh squeezed is best)

  • Sour Cream (I typically use low-fat but full-fat tastes good too)

  • Diced fresh Jalapeno (remember, the more seeds you use, the hotter it will be)

  • Garlic Salt (regular salt is fine too, but the garlic salt just adds an amazing extra dash of flavor)

  • Black Pepper (optional)

Mix it up and Enjoy!!
